My 2nd all time favourite movie of the 70’s. I adored this film, the original version released in 1971 starred Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka.
This film was full of color & magically transported you into a land of pure fantasy. My mouth watered watching Charlie gingerly open those golden wrapped Wonka Bars & I screamed with excitement when he found the golden ticket! I longed for a life lasting gobstopper & a sip from the chocolate river surrounded by the tiny (but slightly scarey) Oompa Loompa people. I wished Wonka chocolate bars were available in Melbourne! This film has been re-made a couple of times since 1971, but the original remains my favourite. Was it yours?
I remember going to the old movie theatre in Chelsea Victoria to see the 1971 Willy Wonka movie with my cousin older Jessie and her young daughter Janette. I was absolutely captivated the entire show!.. The colours, songs & that delicious chocolate river had me mesmerized and I did not want the film to end! I so wanted a Wonka Bar after that movie but you could not buy them in Australia unfortunately. There have been several re-makes of this movie since then, but the original still remains my favourite.
Watch the opening scene from the original movie – includes “The Candy Man” song
Does anyone remember the Whistlestop theme park?
It was a full-size locomotive (think: Puffing Billy) on a track circling a lake (fuzzy memories on this bit.)
It was in the area now bordered by Skye Road, Warrawee Circuit and Dunsterville Crescent.
The park at the corner of Skye Rd and Dalpura Cct is Whistlestop Reserve.
Interestingly, Council refer to it as WhistleTOP not STOP. I’ve probably been wrong all these years. 🙁
