Roller Skates have certainly evolved!. Now we have fancy fiberglass wheels & supportive boots for protection. In the old days these clunky metal rolling death traps were just strapped over whatever shoes you were wearing at the time! The early versions even came with a key.
I don’t know who invented these awful contraptions, but they were lethal!
They sort of expanded in the middle to fit your foot by adjusting the screw. You wore your sneakers & they strapped over the top. When you lifted your foot, the skate had a slight ‘dangle’ & it clunked on the pavement with every step. I remember they NEVER went in a straight line & you took your life in your hands every time you put them on!
Hey, how many people ripped the soles off of their dress shoes learning to skate with these? how many of us kids lost the “skate key?”
I HAD SIMILAR THE WHEELS AND THE LEATHER STRAP WHERE BLUE, AND COULD ADJUST THE BOTTOM TO FIT FOR SHOE FOOT SIZE. MISS THOSE, I MISS MY CHILDHOOD YRS.
OMG, I had totally forgotten about these! I don’t remember the wheels being steel though.
